In this episode of the F.L.O.W. Podcast, we welcome Dr. Sharon H. Porter, an inspiring educator, whose journey began after a memorable experience hearing her fourth grade teacher read Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. That initial spark led her to become a fourth-grade teacher in Charlotte, NC. Through the years she formed deep connections with students and maintains a cherished drawing from a former second-grade student.
Although Dr. Sharon never envisioned herself as a school leader, a move to the Washington, DC area shifted her perspective and encouraged her to pursue higher education. She discovered a love for media after completing her dissertation, and that was the springboard into becoming an author and podcast host. In this episode, we explore:
- The power of education in shaping lives and communities
- The importance of mentorship and representation
- Sharon’s commitment to building a pipeline of teacher leaders and principals

Breaking Down Doors In Education
Wednesday May 15, 2024
Wednesday May 15, 2024
Black women are sometimes elevated to leadership positions during times of crisis and expected to work miracles with little or no support. This concept is known as the glass cliff. In this episode of The F.L.O.W. Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Shanessa Fenner, principal of William T. Brown Elementary School in North Carolina, to discuss her journey in education, leadership, and overcoming challenges as a Black woman in her field. She holds a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Central University, two master's degrees from Fayetteville State University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Fayetteville State University. Despite being placed in underperforming schools, she managed to raise test scores and leveraged her relationships to raise funding for her students. She continues to be a multifaceted woman who does not leave a stone unturned and her motto is “We were placed here to do great things and that is what I am going to do by the grace of God.”
Key Takeaways:
- The importance of building relationships with staff, students, and families in educational leadership
- Encouragement for women to take risks and not be limited by others' expectations
- Leveraging determination to overcome obstacles as a Black woman in leadership

Embracing Your Calling
Wednesday May 01, 2024
Wednesday May 01, 2024
A “calling” is a desire to address a need or problem in the world. In this episode, I sit down with April Lancit, CEO of April Lancit and Associates, a Private Practice specializing in Mental Health services and support. Black professionals make up three percent of the mental health industry, but April knew from an early age that being a therapist was her “calling”. She couldn’t envision herself doing anything different. April, who also serves as Assistant Professor & Program Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at La Salle University is the first African American female to hold the role in the university's history. She shares her career journey of being a “first” and “only” and discusses her passion for providing mental health services in the Black community.
Key Takeaways:
- The importance of finding your voice as a leader and making your presence known.
- Understanding your employer's HR benefits and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) related to mental health.
- The value of perseverance, relationship-building, and staying true to your vision.
- Prioritizing mental health over titles and recognizing when it's time to move on.
